Did the ancient Mexican culture die during the conquest by the Spaniards in the 16th century, and are the remaining indigenous populations simply fossils, condemned five hundred years ago to disappear because they have no place in the present? 
 The liberty of the past, the golden age before colonial domination, is not a dead past lost forever, but the basis of hope. In the cycle of time that age will come again. Welcome to Wegman’s Wild World of Weimaraners, where dogs bake cakes and lounge like royalty. Known to the world as the “dog photographer,” William Wegman has spent the past 45 years dressing and posing his canine muses in elaborate ensembles, finding whimsy in the absurd. His work is at measures droll and enchanting, evoking awe in audiences around the world. EN—————— NEBULA is an experiment that aims at finding the link between two trends that develop simultaneously in the history of film – Lumières concept of a movie as a record of reality and Méliés’s idea that uses the film as a tool for creation of imaginative worlds. NEBULA draws from both of these approaches and becomes a combination, collage, in which the recorded figurative picture is intermingled with abstract compositions being the graphic equivalent of music. The project using the volumetric filmmaking technique (RGB+D) is, on the one hand, the recording of an event (a meeting of musicians playing a jazz composition “Sleepwalker” by Maciej Obara) and, on the other, an attempt to obtain the visual experience of music by using the soundtrack of a recorded piece of music at the stage of post-production. The picture created as a result of the recording represents the “Lumières line” that aims at reflecting the reality in the most accurate way. Musical layer that has its sources also in the recording becomes a tool for creation of abstract visual compositions that does not bear traits of reality (Méliés’s line). These two approaches are combined into an audio visual form resembling a video clip. The aim of this project, besides examining the links between record and creation based on non-figurative forms, is also the exploration of the new volumetric filmmaking technique (picture recorded by a Kinect sensor). PL—————— NEBULA to rodzaj eksperymentu, będącego próbą znalezienia punktu wspólnego między dwiema równolegle rozwijającymi się tendencjami w historii filmu - lumièrowską koncepcją filmu jako rejestracji rzeczywistości a mélièsowską filozofią wykorzystującą medium filmowe jako narzędzie do kreowania fantazyjnych światów. NEBULA czerpie z obu tych postaw i staje się swoistym połączeniem, kolażem, w którym zarejestrowany obraz figuratywny przeplata się z kompozycjami abstrakcyjnymi, które są graficznym ekwiwalentem muzyki. Projekt, wykorzystując technikę filmowania wolumetrycznego (RGB+D), jest z jednej strony rejestracją wydarzenia - spotkania muzyków grających jazzową kompozycję “Sleepwalker” autorstwa Macieja Obary, z drugiej zaś - poprzez użycie na etapie postprodukcji ścieżki dźwiękowej zarejestrowanego utworu - próbą uzyskania wizualnego doświadczenia muzyki. Obraz powstały w wyniku rejestracji reprezentuje „linię lumièreowską”, skupiającą się na jak najwierniejszym oddaniu rzeczywistości. Warstwa muzyczna (mająca swe źródła również w rejestracji) staje się natomiast narzędziem do tworzenia abstrakcyjnych kompozycji wizualnych, nienoszących znamion reprezentacji rzeczywistości (“linia mélièsowska”). Obie te wartości połączone zostały w audiowizualną formę przypominającą teledysk. Po za badaniem punktów stycznych rejestracji i kreacji, opartej na formach niefiguratywnych, celem projektu była również eksploracja nowego medium jakim jest technika filmowania wolumetrycznego, czyli obrazu zarejestrowanego na pomocą sensora Kinect.

In September 2017, I stepped up to the starting line of the Run...

In September 2017, I stepped up to the starting line of the Run Rabbit Run 100 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, alongside my friend Jayson Sime. The race is a 102.9-mile ultramarathon with 20,000 feet of elevation gain, which is no small feat for a couple of guys who don’t know what they’re doing. Jayson had talked me into it, and if I were to be completely honest, I’d say we were there to test out his life philosophy, which is basically that you can do anything you dream up, as long as you put in the work and refuse to quit. That ethic has worked for him in almost every other area of life, despite growing up in poverty, one of six children with no father, and dyslexia. In the six months leading up to the race, we figured since we weren’t naturally talented runners, the best thing we could do is work hard. So we ran 50- to 70-mile weeks all summer, and went through a full range of feelings: fear, regret, sadness, FOMO, hunger, thirst, exhaustion, pain, and joy. And gluttony, which is not a feeling, but what happens after you run 20 or more miles. The chart below is a representation of a training plan for a 100-mile race (but if you’re really looking to train for a 100-mile race, you should find a real training plan online or in a book). That’s where the ATF’s National Tracing Center handles roughly 8,000 active traces per day — all while inside a government-mandated technology time-capsule that makes searching a database of gun owners impossible. This is nothing like those cop shows you watch. With more gun stores in the U.S.A. than McDonalds, Starbucks, and supermarkets combined, there’s a lot of paperwork to manually sort through. These are hand edited and constructed from a combination of self shot footage, orphaned material and frames from a 35mm trailer of Get Shorty retrieved from an abandoned projection room. After hand editing the film collages, each strip is scanned at very hi-resolution, frame by frame, and reassembled digitally, so that even though in a conventional sense they are defective and unprojectable as films, this process allows the celluloid to reanimate and reveal its potential motion through digital stop motion. As there are multiple gauges combined in each strip, a single loop can be calibrated for 35mm, 16mm/8mm or super 8mm - each configuration giving a distinctly different dynamic to the moving images. Considering each strip as visual or colour music is of primary consideration during the films hand editing and construction. Shifts in motion, contrast, colour, rhythm and the juxtaposition of action within the filmstrips alongside one another are all taken into account, akin to creating a musical score. With the physical length of the strips allowing an inherent duration and rhythm to exist within them, (an aspect emphasised when they are looping), and with each one being a different length to one another, the tempo and nuance of the visual music is constantly shifting. The project is inspired in part by visiting innumerable projection booths over the past few years at film festivals and cinemas across Europe, North America and the UK. Again and again I would witness an absent space where the 35mm projector once stood, where only traces of these virtually extinct machines remained.

Preschool Poets is a series of eight short animated films based on poems composed by four and five year olds. Conceived and produced by artist and poetry teacher Nancy Kangas and filmmaker Josh Kun, the project is based on Nancy’s work teaching preschoolers to write poetry at Columbus Early Learning Center, in Ohio. She’s picked eight beautiful, startling poems to be recited by the children themselves and adapted by animation artists from around the world. I was invited to interpret the poem “Me”, by Ja'Lantea, in which he feels a new day should come with his new name: J-Money. I wanted to take a look at the popular Trevi Fountain but I never managed to get close to it. The place was assaulted by hundreds of tourists, some of them formed a huge line to get a spot in front of the Fountain. Needless to say that I was very pissed by this sight and left for the not less crowded Pantheon. I was shocked by the mass of people walking all around the city, yet I was one of them, not better or worst. Like all these tourists, I burned hundred of gallons of fuel to get there, rushed to visit the city in a few days and stayed in a hotel downtown. Then, I remembered a video I watched a few months earlier from the artist Hiérophante (vimeo.com/151297208). I decided to make this kind of sarcastic video but with the focus on travel and mass tourism. Hiérophante admitted that his video was “cliché” and that he got inspired by other videos. So I’m basically making fun of something I’m part of. The irony is strong. While the era of mass world tourism and global world travel opened up in the 60s and 70s with the development of Jumbo Jets and low cost airlines, there is a new trend that consists of taking pictures everywhere you go to share it on social networks. During my trip, I felt that many people didn’t really enjoy the moment and were hooked to their smartphones. As if the ultimate goal of travel was to brag about it online and run after the likes and followers. In a recent article published by the Guardian, journalist Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett described this phenomena: “These Instagrammers are collectively sucking the joy and spontaneity out of travel photography, and for those unfortunate enough to bump into them abroad, possibly travel itself. We must pity the poor locals, who have to put up with them. […] Social media encourages the memeification of human experience. Instead of diversity we see homogeneity. Some of them were inspiring and lead by talented persons. In the end, social networks are just a tool. For better or worse, (or both). Eventually, I couldn’t secure a picture of the Trevi Fountain for my Instragram account but I still had a very nice time in Italy. ► Production: I used images available on public Instagram accounts. Finding and sorting the material took a lot of time but I produced the video over several months when I had time. The process of aligning each and every images manually in relation to the next was very tedious. In terms of copyright, I believe that this type of use fall under the fair use. This is not a commercial project and every image appears for less than ¼ of a second.
