An analogy between the modern human being, living in mass...

An analogy between the modern human being, living in mass cities, and the phenomenon of the circle of death - observed in nature with ants who are separated from the main foraging party and lose the pheromone track. They begin to follow one another, forming a continuously rotating circle, commonly known as a “death spiral” because the ants might eventually die of exhaustion. Shot in Mexico City, this vibrant and impressive city is a protagonist, symbolizing a life in endless high speed movement and the humans who are dedicating their lives to endless movement, self-exhaustion in a modern capitalistic based world. High Road is a story of resilience, persistence and strength....

High Road is a story of resilience, persistence and strength. Meg Fisher has been on the start line of countless paracycling races – she’s won World Championships and Olympic medals. Jack Berry, just 14 years old, has never raced his bicycle, having only recently recovered from a battle with cancer. Together, they prepare to take on a local gravel challenge thanks to Meg’s advocacy for the inclusion of a para cycling category. Though they have each lost a leg in their own challenging stories, Meg and Jack show us there is always a reason to keep pushing – to keep riding. Inside the halls of a dystopian textile factory two young workers shortly escape their harsh reality into the fantasies of a fairytale. Director’s Note: With STAINED SKIN we create a fictional space that attempts to approach the subject of fast fashion in a metaphorical way. The world depicted is a self-contained microcosm that blurs the lines between fictional real-life and the fairy tale narrative. We focus on the symbiotic relationship of Alba and Samy, which for us embodies the resilience of women to their environment and their alliance with each other. A SENSE OF SCALE is a reminiscense to the famous “Sense of Scale” documentary by Berton Pierce form 2011. As the documentary, my experimental short film is all about details and the beauty of practical effects. I want to emphasize the meaning of handmade visuals and the effort it takes to stage sceneries on a small scale. I captured very tiny areas of paint flowing on a piece of paper while zooming in the closest possible with a custom lens setup. All shots are taken with my RED DSMC2 in 8K and several macro lenses. It took me around 1 year to finish this piece. Color graded and optimized for HDR devices. Thanks for watching! Since the 1800s bicycles have been a powerful liberating tool, starting with the first faltering pedal strokes of a child daring to venture a little further from home. Yet, somewhere in our cultural trajectory, many of us have forgotten the power of this simple machine to build community. This film celebrates the “Run what you brung” adage, and reminds us that, however we choose to engage with the ever changing world of cycling, there is more that brings us together than sets us apart.

Over 100,000 tonnes of plastic pollution is generated from chewing gum every year and yet, most people still don’t know that the gum they’re chewing on contains plastic. That’s right, conventional gum is made from petroleum-derived plastics which is what gives it that chewy texture and lets it last long. It’s non-biodegradable, toxic for animals and the environment, and 80-90% of it is not disposed of properly, floating in oceans or stuck to something, somewhere, waiting to be removed. A piece of gum seems inconsequential, but not if you consider the fact that every piece of plastic-based gum that’s ever been chewed STILL exists on the planet. Enter Milliways. With its natural ingredients and super-chewy, long-lasting chicle base, they’re biodegradable, good for you and the environment, and here to change things one piece of gum at a time. Directed and Art Directed by Danae Gosset Produced by Pencil Studio 3D Lead Design & Animation: Vasco Gross 3D Character Animation: David Bonilla 2D Animation: Britton Korbel, Isabel Stub, Amy Cho, Ewan Creed, Gabby Sibilska, Emma Zwickert Titles Design by Julie Pavia Thanks to Patricia Gloum For this video we used some prompt-based Artificial Intelligence technology to generate the backgrounds. We then produced and layered a lot of 3D animations, footage, and illustration on top of it to make the video feel special and tailored to the song. We then proceeded to illustrate individually all of the frames with a variety of mediums such as watercolor, gouache, acrylic, color pencils, and pastel. As a last coat, we re-generated the entire hand illustrated video through a style transfer AI program. We set it to more or less opacity in some areas of the video, to act like a digital glaze on top of it, without losing the hard labor of the handmade quality. The story we aimed to communicate is about escaping, embracing, and surrendering to the unexpected. Pushing the metaphysical and mystical sense of the human experience, feeling that we belong from the sole exploration of our minds and into the infinity of space. An abstract and psychedelic visual exploration of self-introspection and imagination.

We all get lost in patterns, for some of us they can be totally...

We all get lost in patterns, for some of us they can be totally consuming. I wanted to make a film about the feeling of being totally consumed by one thought. A thought that endlessly repeats, that spirals out of control until there’s nothing of you left. The light effect technique reflects this repetition, it is one singular beam duplicated and then stacked back in time. The light itself is real, no CGI was used in its creation. All the effects are captured in camera. The film was shot on 16mm on the Kimmeridge Ledges of the Jurassic coast in England. When you see a beautiful picture of a person standing on top of...

When you see a beautiful picture of a person standing on top of a big mountain, it’s easy to assume their life, one of adventure, must be bliss. It’s simple, right? No screens, no deadlines, just the awe of nature and moving your body in places most of us only dream of. You’re at the top of the world–you should feel it, right? But the reality is: When you live with depression, it doesn’t care where you are, how high you’ve climbed, or how many peaks you’ve bagged.  Chains of Habit brings to light Ted Hesser’s struggle with depression, in hopes of destigmatizing the conversation around mental health and encouraging everyone to get outside and get well. Please watch full screen and in the dark! Thank you. ************* THE EVENT 2022/narrative/11min. It’s 2 AM, and Vince just wants to know why. Directed and edited by Frank Mosley and Hugo De Sousa Written by Hugo De Sousa Starring Hugo De Sousa, Frank Mosley, and Jennifer Kim Produced by Chelsea Bo and Sean Drummond Cinematography by Kenneth Wales SCREENINGS: -2022 Slamdance Film Festival (World Premiere) -2022 Santa Barbara International Film Festival -2022 FilmFort Festival -2022 Oxford Film Festival -2022 Sun Valley Film Festival -2022 Ashland Independent Film Festival -2022 Florida Film Festival -2022 Mammoth Lakes Film Festival -2022 Rooftop Films, NYC -2022 Palm Springs ShortFest -2022 HollyShorts Film Festival -2022 Sidewalk Film Festival -2022 Skyline Indie Film Fest -2022 Fantastic Fest -2022 Eastern Oregon Film Festival -2022 Dallas International Film Festival PRESS: “With the filmmakers’ abilities to manipulate light, understand human emotion, and ultimately capture the essence of life itself, their short film should take the world by storm. The Event is a breathtakingly unique trip through the human psyche, and we can all learn a lesson or two from what the film has to say.” -Kyle Bain, Film Threat “Bound to take the festival world by storm… the film accompanies its laughs with sharp observations. “The Event” itself proves irresistible as the pair behind the camera, along with cinematographer Kenneth Wales, involve elegant chiaroscuro lighting for this most uncomfortable conversation, and the more ridiculous the situation gets, the more authentic it feels.” -Stephen Saito, The Moveable Fest “Are we afraid of telling our friends the absolute truth? The Event confronts those feelings in a refreshing, honest, and touching way that I did not expect. Frank Mosley and Hugo De Sousa are great together.”   -Joey Moser, Awards Daily *Listed Top 25 Shorts of 2022 HollyShorts Film Festival  “It’s a deceptively simple comedic premise, seemingly targeted at a narrow audience of frustrated indie filmmakers who feel Vince’s pain. Yet Vince and Jack’s ensuing argument also ends up probing universal themes of friendship that everyone can relate to.”   -Sean O’Neal, Texas Monthly *Listed Top Texan Performances at Fantastic Fest- Frank Mosley “De Sousa’s hilariously earnest performance and flawless sense of timing, turns every line of the clever dialogue into comedy gold. Mosley, as the exasperated friend, gets his biggest laughs from what he doesn’t say, making each defensive and befuddled facial expression speak volumes.” -Patrick Gibbs, SLUG Mag “The Event has a silly sweetness that stems largely from the real-life chemistry of de Sousa and Mosley. There’s a comfortable familiarity to their friendship on screen which makes the difficult conversations that fuel this short truly delightful. An additionally delightful performance by Jennifer Kim as Jack’s girlfriend Beatrice adds a feminine touch to the film – and a few really great laughs.” -Miranda Riddle, Horror Buzz

Director’s statement: Drawing on Autism is an investigation into the ethics of representation in animated documentaries. Although I am neurodivergent, I’m not autistic, so when working with my anonymous participant, an autistic friend, I needed to be mindful of well-rehearsed and problematic autism tropes. These tropes seem to say more about the desires and needs of neurotypical audiences or filmmakers than they do about the autistic subjects. Moreover, animation presents a distinct set of ethical dilemmas. Without the mechanical indifference of a camera, the act of observation is substituted for expressive or symbolic representation. A mode of representation where the artist is responsible for how the documentary participant looks, where they appear, and what they do. Through collaborative feedback I attempt to share these responsibilities with my participant, while making use of positional and textual reflexivity to equip my audiences with the information they need to scrutinise my documentary interventions. - Alex Widdowson Awards and Accolades: Winner - UK Research & Innovation: Research in Film Awards 2021 - Best Doctoral and Early Career Film Winner - Rising of Lucitania AnimaDoc Film Festival 2022 - Best AnimaDoc Blue Ribend Award (Student Jury) Nominated - Edinburgh International Film Festival 2022 - Norman McLaren Award for Best British Animation Nominated - UK Research & Innovation: Research in Film Awards 2021 - Best Animated Film Official Selection: Rhode Island International Film Festival 2021 (Premier) Raindance 2021 Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival 2021 New Orleans Film Festival 2021 Berlin Festival of Animation 2021 Spark Animation 2021 Factual Animation Film Festival 2021 Montreal International Animation Festival 2021 Big Cartoon Festival 2021 London Short Film Festival 2022 Fargo Film Festival 2022 Cinemagic ON THE PULSE Short Film Festival 2022 Edinburgh International Film Festival 2022 Credits: Directed, produced, and animated by Alex Widdowson Sound design and music by Vicky Freund Additional animation by Ciara Kerr Additional art direction by Dan Castro Made with support from Autism through Cinema, Queen Mary University of London, and the Wellcome Trust Alex Widdowson © 2021

Over the course of the COVID lockdowns - desperate for the outside world beyond my doorstep, city, state and country - I started crafting a project using entirely Google Maps Streetview Images. I viewed and downloaded the world from my desk, finding amazing spaces, altering, hand tracking and creating timelapses and shots. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of the material. Until I heard the latest album from Axel Boman. Here was a song from one of my favorite artists with such a propulsive and idealistic reaching out towards the wider world. Letting the wind take us, with love as the sail, a blur of adventure across the planet. Special thanks to Axel, Kornel and Studio Barnhus for the trust, a random plugin that let me download raw 360 images and Google for bringing the world to our screens. Language has the power to bring people and nations together by facilitating dialogue and strengthening human connection. Each language has its own way of describing the world, and in turn, affects how the world is seen through it. ‘More Than Words’ is an animated video series which celebrates words and phrases that don’t exist in the English language. Episode 1 describes the wonderful German phrase ‘Innerer Schweinehund’, which literally translates to ‘inner pig-dog’ - the inner voice that encourages you to be lazy. CREDITS: Concept, design, animation and sound design - Serafima Serafimova VO - Georg Csarmann Music - ’ The Model’ by Kraftwerk Special thanks to Patrick Mallett and Sara Abou Dan, for being my guinea pigs and allowing me to film them with a pile of duvets and backpacks which later transformed into a pig-dog. Also to Giulia Bavagnoli without whom the pig-dog would’ve looked VERY odd and creepy.

Now that Roe v. Wade is overturned, one of the few choices you still have left is Eff-Urself! A foolproof way to guarantee you’ll never need an abortion… which is actually eff-ed up. … Made for the National Network Of Abortion Funds, Eff-Urself is a parody product and film that satirically exposes the lack of choices Americans with a uterus have left for protecting their bodies and reproductive health. It speaks to the unjust manner in which wombs are being treated by politicians, and the absurd lengths people might have to go, to avoid getting pregnant in one of the riskiest times. … Eff-Urself is a non-solution to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. … Visit EffUrself.com to find real solutions, or donate. Proceeds support people who desperately need help in states where abortion is illegal or nearly impossible to obtain. In a little house filled with mirrors, Fiep focuses on her physical imperfections so intensely that her distorted self-image grows out of proportion… Literally. ‘Reflection’ is a short animated film full of turbulent emotions, relating to self-image and insecurity. It shows the thought spiral of self-loathing that we all get lost in sometimes, when we look in the mirror and absolutely despise what we see… The intensity of this feeling is captured in ‘Reflection’ through hand-drawn animation, with ink and gouache. Ouri fights a merciless red hand in this K-Hole inspired video, offering a trippy visual feast as a conclusion to her album Frame of a Fauna. Collaborating once more with director Derek Branscombe, this video is inspired by a Ketamine treatement Ouri received last year. “Sometimes the need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer.” — Ken Kesey A mystical journey of a powerful shaman from the deep jungle to the cosmos, based upon a very ancient Peruvian legend. The old man wanted to find a way to heal people’s souls more profoundly so he sat under a tree and started to meditate for such a long time that at some point a vine sprouted from his chest and climbed on the tree up to the sky, becoming a link between the Earth and the Cosmos. The vine was called Ayahuasca and the people from the village discovered that combined with the chacruna leaf, it had great healing properties. Direction, Animation, Music by Jules Guérin.

‘Down Here’, the visual piece from composer Claudio Olachea and director Omer Ben Shachar, depicts a nightmarish scenario where everyone wears identical masks to fit in. With COVID-19, the city was devoid of people. The landscape that the city once possessed has changed completely, becoming silent and eerie. However, the sense of déjà vu and memories that everyone has are still in the place itself. With these memories, the city continues to mark time. On Running brought us onboard to create a campaign film titled ‘Game On’ for the launch of the new Cloudgo shoes. Cloudgo has On Running’s unique CloudTec cushioning combined with a tailored Speedboard to give the wearer an outstanding comfort and inspiring energy return, every single step. We sought to create more than just another sportswear film and looked at creating something that extends into the real world using augmented reality and gaming experiences. The Cloudgo world switches off gravity, transforms, stretches, multiplies, deforms and reinvents the world around the wearer the further they go.
